Secondhand September

ree

It’s the start of September – already!

Like many of us, you might be wondering, “How is it September again?” or “Where did the summer go?” But beyond the seasonal shift, September also brings with it a timely reminder of the value of second-hand shopping – good for your wallet, and even better for the planet.

Enter Second Hand September.

This national campaign, launched by Oxfam, challenges us to say no to new clothes for 30 days and instead choose pre-loved, vintage, or upcycled fashion. It’s a brilliant way to rethink our shopping habits and reduce our environmental impact. Want to know more? Check it out here: Second Hand September | Oxfam GB.

But really – why stop at September? If you haven’t tried second-hand shopping before, now is the perfect time to start. However, once you do, you’ll see it’s a sustainable, budget-friendly habit that works all year round – and not just for clothes, but for everything from furniture to toys and more.

Here’s why it matters:

  • The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions.

  • Textile production causes 20% of all industrial water pollution worldwide.

  • A single cotton t-shirt requires about 2,700 litres of water to produce.

  • The polyester industry burns through 300 million barrels of oil each year, releasing 1.5 trillion pounds of greenhouse gases.

  • In the UK, 350,000 tonnes of wearable clothing end up in landfill annually – that’s roughly 1 in 3 garments.

  • Over half of fast fashion is thrown away within a year.

  • And since 2000, the average shopper is buying 60% more clothing, but keeping each item for only half as long.

All of this points to one clear takeaway: The most sustainable clothes are the ones already in your wardrobe. But if you do need something new (to you), go second-hand. Choosing preloved helps reduce waste, avoids the environmental cost of new production, and saves you money. That’s a triple win.

Where to start? There are plenty of easy, accessible options:

  • Online platforms like Vinted, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace

  • High street charity shops

  • Local swap groups or passing on outgrown items to friends and family

So, how did I kick off September?

I picked up a huge bundle of preloved children’s clothes for just £10 from a local Facebook group. It was easy, saved me a fortune, and gave my eldest everything he needs for the season – without having to buy new.

Let’s make this September (and beyond) all about smart, sustainable choices.
