FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please use the contact form to write your question to us if you don't find the answer below

Where can I take my recycling that doesn't go in the green bin?

1. TERRACYCLE: Everything that falls into the Terracycle scheme to be taken to the bins next to the church, click here for more information.

2. SOFT PLASTICS: Take them to the Co-op in the village. There is a general lack of transparency when it comes to how much of the plastic is actually recycled - or rather downcycled - but for now, if we can keep it out of landfill, then this is the better option for households.

Can you help me reduce my energy bills?

Not directly, but we do have a thermal imaging camera available to borrow from PJH Estate Agents on the high street. You can contact Basingstoke Green Team who will carry out a free energy survey of your house and point you to potential grants for improvements you could make. Laura has written a handy blog about her experience having the survey done, read it here.

Where can I find you?

We hold a public meeting every other month where you are more than welcome to come along. See when our next meeting is here. Or write to us either using the contact form or send us an email.

Isn't it expensive being green?

Living more sustainably is actually about being more frugal - being more efficient with your energy usage and making the things you have last longer, be it household items or clothes. It's also about wasting less. When it comes to food waste, you could save up to £70 a month (according to WRAP research from 2023). Eating less meat also saves you money - just cutting meat one or two days a week will save you ££. It is also about making more considered choices when you come to buy something. Firstly, ask yourself: do you actually NEED the thing at all? If the answer is yes, then choose the better quality item and sometimes that means more expensive, but it will last much longer. So, in short - no, it is not more expensive being green, especially when you apply a long-term view on your investments.

Are solar panels worth the investment?

Sustainable Overton can't answer that for you, but we do have a video on our You Tube page where a resident shares her experiences with solar panels. You can also check out â€‹Hampshire County Council's page on solar panels - read it here.

Where can I charge my car in the village?

There are EV charging points at the London Road Car Park and at the car park by the recycling bins also on London Road.

Why does it matter what I do?

When it comes to climate change it all adds up. That's why we as individuals have to take responsibility too. If we all make the changes and e.g. eat less meat, create wildlife gardens, fly less, buy less and waste less, then it all adds up to big changes. Yes, government and industries have most responsibility for avoiding climate collapse, but together people are powerful too.

Is the Overton Cup more environmentally friendly than a disposable cup?

Let's compare the carbon footprints:  If you chose an Overton Cup 7 times instead of 7 disposable cups, you will use 41% less carbon. If you use an Overton Cup every day for 6 months instead of 182 single-use disposable cups, then you will save 95% of the carbon.
